This 6 days tour Marrakech with kids, hiking, desert and atlas mountains is perfect for active families who want to experience the true diversity of Morocco—from bustling city life and rugged mountain trails to the serene expanse of the Sahara Desert. We’ve balanced physical activity with comfortable travel and cultural immersion, ensuring an engaging and memorable adventure for everyone.
8:00 AM from your accommodation in Marrakech. (We recommend having little ones ready with sunscreen applied and comfy clothes on!).
Your adventure begins with a morning pickup from your Marrakech accommodation. We’ll leave the city behind and journey east, crossing the spectacular High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. We’ll make stops at strategic viewpoints for breathtaking photos of the winding roads and Berber villages clinging to the mountainsides.
After descending from the pass, the landscape changes, revealing the pre-Saharan environment. We’ll continue our drive towards the Dades Valley, arriving in the Bomalne Dades area in the late afternoon. You’ll check into your hotel, which likely offers stunning views of the surrounding valley and palmeraie. This is a peaceful introduction to the region, away from the busier tourist centers. Dinner and overnight in Bomalne Dades.
After breakfast, today is dedicated to exploring the beautiful, rugged landscapes on foot. We will embark on a guided hike through the foothills and gorges near Bomalne. This is a fantastic opportunity to experience the tranquility of the region, see traditional Berber villages, and admire the unique geology of the area, including the beginnings of the famous “Monkey Fingers” rock formations.
The hike will be tailored to your group’s fitness level. You’ll have a chance to enjoy a picnic lunch or return to your hotel. The afternoon is free to relax, perhaps by the hotel pool, and soak in the dramatic scenery. Dinner and overnight in Bomalne Dades.
After breakfast, we’ll formally explore the Dades Valley, driving along the “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs” and stopping at a strategic viewpoint to see the stunning serpentine bends of the Dades Gorge.
We then continue towards the Sahara, passing through Tinghir and stopping at the magnificent Todra Gorge. Here, you can take a leisurely walk along the river at the base of the towering 300-meter high cliff walls—a perfect spot for photos and letting the kids run around.
Back in the vehicle, we push on towards the desert. The landscape will flatten, and the first golden dunes of Erg Chebbi will appear on the horizon. Upon arrival in Merzouga, you’ll be welcomed at a desert auberge. As the afternoon cools, you’ll mount your camels for a peaceful sunset trek into the dunes. You’ll arrive at your luxury desert camp in time to watch the stars come out. Enjoy a traditional Berber dinner and music around the campfire. Overnight in your private en-suite tent at the desert camp.
Wake up early to experience a magical sunrise over the Sahara—a truly unforgettable sight. After breakfast at the camp, you’ll return by camel or 4×4 to your auberge in Merzouga.
The day is dedicated to exploring the secrets of the desert. We’ll take a 4×4 desert safari, which may include visits to a nomadic family to learn about their traditional way of life, a stop at a fossil workshop(the desert was once an ocean floor!), and a drive past the black desert hamada and mining villages. You might even have the chance to try sandboarding down the golden dunes. Dinner and overnight at your auberge in Merzouga.
After breakfast, we bid farewell to the dunes and begin our journey back towards Ouarzazate. We’ll drive through the scenic Draa Valley, famous for its long, lush palm grove—a striking contrast to the desert you’ve just left.
We arrive in Ouarzazate in the afternoon. Known as the “Hollywood of Africa,” you can visit the famous Taourirt Kasbah or, for movie fans, opt for a tour of the Atlas Film Studios to see props and sets from famous films. Check into your hotel and enjoy a relaxing evening. Dinner and overnight in Ouarzazate.
After breakfast, we have one more iconic stop: the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ait Ben Haddou. This is Morocco’s most famous ksar (fortified village). You’ll have time to explore its winding streets and climb to the top of the granary for spectacular views. It has been the backdrop for countless films and TV shows, including Gladiator and Game of Thrones.
After this exploration, we begin our final journey, crossing back over the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. We will arrive in Marrakech in the late afternoon, where you will be dropped off at your hotel, marking the end of your 6-day adventure.
